January 2004 Armchair General's Revue Our esteemed President

From the President's Desk:

Greetings Everyone;

The wrath of winter is upon us. Out here in Alberta we've been seeing temperatures in the -25 C to -35 C range all week. Several things to discuss, so I'll get started.

I would like to welcome Philip (Shen_Fung) to the fold of government members. He will be taking over Pete's (Boromir's) position as Mentorship Coordinator. Also, Gio (Leone) will be taking over local chapters. And on a final note of government news, I would like to thank Gil (Tusk) for all his work over the years.

The Master's, Veteran's and Combat Pro Tourneys are underway, and the 2003 ITSL season is in its finals. It's not too late to get a team in for the 2004 season of the ITSL.

And finally for the 2004 convention news. After seeking membership input for the location of the 2004 convention, the membership voted for Washington, D.C. Ron (Einstien) will be heading up the planning comittee, and would like anyone who is interested in helping out to send him an email at rdbaker43@starpower.net.

Good luck in your gaming.

Eric (Raist)
IAAPA President

Senate Reports

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER - Michael (micwil) - webmaster@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

Some changes in the Senate to report to you all.

In response to Lee's outstanding work manning the Help Desk (and his apparent willingness to continue in that position), we have promoted the Help Desk Office into the Senate. As of our next election (in March), Lee will become the Minister of the Help Desk. But don't worry, I am sure the robe won't affect his demeanour, or his willingness to help all members with any problems they may be having.

We also have plans to recruit a member of the Legislature into the Senate to bring our numbers back up to nine - keep your eyes on the web page and you will find out who :)

We are considering a complete overhaul of the coding on the web site, as it is becoming increasingly apparent that all the patches and code fixes we keep on having done are insufficient. In addition, the initial code was written in 1997-1998, and technology, programming languages and server resources have changed substantially since that time. We will keep the membership appraised once we have decided on some potential courses of action.

The problem w.r.t. email bouncing to certain domains (including AOL) unfortunately seems to be a issue with no easy resolution. We have talked to AOL (unfortunately, they don't seem to care), and we have also talked to the people who manage our servers, and while there are certain fixes, this has no long term solution - unless we choose to move to a dedicated IP address server with reverse DNS lookup. While these are more expensive, this option has some distinct advantages including never running the risk of being 'lumped in' with other virtual servers.

Despite all the above, the Association's internet resources are for the most part running smoothly, even as we weather the My-Doom storm of emails (I stopped counting the number of infected emails I received when it hit 5,000).

I will continue to be available to the best of my ability, and as always, feel free to contact myself or any other member of government with questions or concerns.

Regards,

micwil
IAAPA Prime Minister

REPORT FROM THE MINISTER OF COMMUNICATION - Gil (Tusk) - who@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

Greetings Fellow Warriors,

It is time for me to finally say goodbye. I've been a dedicated IAAPA member since 12/96 and a Govt official "Volunteer" for 3 years plus despite not even playing the game since spring of 2003. To clear up any cloudy appearances: there is no controversy: I have not joined another club: I am not mad at anyone or anything.

I'd still ask all of you who enjoy this club to help out what is YOUR club. If I do pick up the game again, it will be here with the IAAPA.

To my long time buddies; Stimpy,AxisSpec,Micwil,Crazyfust(PhilospherKing),Polaris, AANUT,Caspeh... I hope your AA Guns shoots down somone else's bombers as well as they did mine.

Goodbye

Tusk (Fmr LrdOfDrems/FMACFAN126)

REPORT FROM THE MINISTER OF LAW - John (JohnPin569) - law@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

From the Law Office...

Scales of Justice

Greetings Fellow Warriors,

I hope everyone is on good health and good spirits. I personally am not, as I have been breathing an awful lot of that cold Canadian air, laced with moose scent, down here in New Orleans.

There has been some continuing problems with AOL rejecting e-mail sent to AOL member's addresses. The technical staff is still working on a fix to this problem. Until then, please send any club correspondence to the JohnPin569@aol.com address until this is resolved.

The club sub rule is the topic this issue. As some of you may remember, this rule was created during the days when we had Gamemasters, actual people, rolling the dice for a turn. When the turn was submitted for resolution, the rules required that the attacker send his non-combat and unit placement moves with the initial send. This gave the defender an unfair advantage to potentially block a non-combat move or a placement of a new unit if a sub retreat was in involved in the turn. Hence, this rule was created to require defenders to pre-submit their withdrawal locations in advance, otherwise they could not interfere with the attacker's movements or placements. The purpose of the club sub rule was never to "prevent" or disallow a defender from retreating to a location that is detrimental to the attacker.

With the current revised Battle Resolution Procedures, there is no further need for this rule and as such the often loved, often hated, Club Sub Rule is now no longer in use and has been removed form the Rules pages.

Take care.
John

REPORT FROM THE CHANCELLOR OF ADJUDICATION - Peter (Boromir) - adjudication@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

As ususal, most games are decided the usual way (on the battlefield), or by mutual agreement
when we call for adjudication.

it is somewhat troubleing that folks sometimes simply ignore deadline, or warnings etc. I'd
much rather have them speak up about their issue/concern.

That being said, we are not tolerat of late nor non-existant, and will happily award an
advancement if only one party submits, and happily advance neither if they both miss. Such
is the nature of time sensitve tourney deadlines and timelines.

REPORT FROM THE IAAPA HERALD - Dan (Daninja) - herald@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

Hear Thee! Hear Thee! Hear Thee!

A particularly nasty failed amphibious assault by the Japanese against the Russians in Persia followed by a major disaster in Egypt because of an incompetent German intelligence officer left me wondering whether or not I should concede the game immediately. This particular game was against the Rewstr and one cannot afford to make mistakes against that wily old chook! Totally disgusted with myself, I turned off the PC, and left the command centre, wandering aimlessly down the road cursing the world, axis and allies and the evil dice. Suddenly I came across a second hand bookshop, which I had never noticed before. I wandered in and fossicked around for about an hour before deciding to leave. As I turned to walk out the door my eyes passed over a dusty shelf in the corner where a single manuscript lay, its front cover waving seductively beckoned me over. I slowly approached the shelf and reached for the manuscript and found that it was devoted to ancient magic. I randomly opened the fragile yellowed pages to reveal a section entirely devoted to Dice Magic. “Crikey” I said, holding my infant son in front of the jaws of the massive crocodile… – oops – sorry different story. Where was I? Oh yeah, Dice Magic, all the secrets of the ancients revealed before my eyes. So what did it say? Well without giving too much away, I can say that dice magic was popular amongst travelling people, soldiers and rulers. Generally the dice were made of ivory, wood, metal and glass, which have all been found in the relics of Ancient Egypt. Hmm, perhaps that may explain those strange results we often see in battles associated with AES. But wait there was more! The Roman Emperor Claudius felt safe to embark on his invasion of Britain because a dice roll promised success! I was onto something big here. I purchased the manuscript and raced home rejoicing in the fact that I would no longer have to burn little plastic AA units to appease the dice gods. I have decided to share some of this wisdom with the rest of the club, so I compiled a summary of the meaning of the dice numbers from the manuscript. It’s all true, really!

One – new beginnings, individualism, pure creation and vision. Endows you with its golden energy and confidence to achieve any aim. Essential for AA guns to deal with heavy bombers. When attacking LAB with the German fighter that damn UK transport always gets one. Generally seen when rolling for tech when you have no fighters left.

Two – duality, partnerships, and balance. Unconscious wisdom, hidden insights, and heightened intuition. Gets you rockets!

Three – fertility, increased conscious and wisdom. Endows you with the power to bring ideas to fruition and increase possibilities. Gets you those silly super subs.

Four – time and space, achievement and success within the limitations imposed by your environment. Ability to adapt your ideas and dreams to the real world and to compromise. Also good if you need LRA.

Five – versatility, communication, restlessness and ingenuity. Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and to find alternative approaches if one is failing. That is, you get IT.

Six – the number of emotions, and attaining peace and harmony in relationships and life. Ability to sympathise with others and to use your understanding to reconcile differences. Heavy bombers will change your emotions J, allowing you to attain peace and harmony by kicking the crap out of your opponent whilst feeling kind of sorry for them L.

Now to some serious business! So far, I have kept the pledge I made in the last review to compile a Snapshots in Time for each month. Check em out if you haven’t already done so. After a few failed attempts at contacting Blackdog (John), a general call to arms using one of those silent dog whistles worked! He was observed sniffing around the bulletin board and even marked his territory with a post. Well we finally got to discuss his plans for compiling a Snapshots in Time for all of IAAPA history, however it would appear that his plans were tied to the upgrades of the server and database and he was not sure whether it could be done yet.

So I will need to do a little more research. Anyway, check out the Snapshots for the first month of 2004 and good luck with your games!

REPORT FROM THE Roving Chancellor - Warren (Reddwarf) - cutthroat@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

I'll be working on a few projects during the year starting off with completing the strategy section (link on the main page). While not a master of strategy myself I will be asking plenty of question of our best players in my effort to fill this section with useful content. Later on during the year I really would like to get things moving on an idea suggested by Wrec_it and that is to introduce a medals and awards system for the club. This system would most likely include recognition of government volunteers as well as individual player achievements. I have another idea in the works but that will have to wait for another occassion. Good gaming!

REPORT FROM THE HELP DESK COORDINATOR - Lee (Hess) - help@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

Greetings fellow members!

Since the last Review, in October, I’ve answered about eighty questions from all sorts of friendly people ... and a few cranks. The people asking are generally new members or people thinking about becoming members. However, there were a fair number of established IAAPA'ers with AOL addresses who were trying to deal with the problem of AOL blocking IAAPA e-mails, including dice roll results. In the end, I couldn't give them much assistance, only commiseration. The problem is still with us.

I also send out a congratulatory message to all those who have passed the Final Hurdle, encouraging them to join. There've been about 60 of them, by my count, since October. About twenty of them joined, and our new members come from the U.S., Canada, China, England, Italy, and the Netherlands. Welcome to the Club, Gentlemen!

We currently have members from six continents: North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Anyone know any prospective members in Antarctica I can talk into joining?

REPORT FROM THE DRAFT OFFICER - Eric (MolotovCocktail) - draft@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

Your faithful draft officer has unfortunately had neither the time to play AA games or perform governmental duties beyond voting this month as I just entered Georgetown University. Once I'm fully settled in here, I can resume more of the duties of my office.
