August 2001 Armchair General's Revue Our esteemed President

Lots of news to report in this month's Revue, from our annual convention occurring next week to the start of the Legislative electoral campaign. The stock markets may be in free fall but our membership continues to grow, and heading into our first renewal period the Association is healthy and vibrant. We also pause this issue to take note of the passing of one our most well-known members, and remember that in the grand scheme of things, having your opponent get Heavy Bombers and Industrial Technology really isn't the end of the world.

From the President's Desk:

It's Convention Time again!

Time to test your metal against each other, face to face. Actually tossing those fickle dice in reality, not via the dreaded dice server. Watching the look of utter horror on your opponent's face as they destroy entire armies and navies.

This August 9-11 we will be gathering to meet, discuss strategy, and share memories. We will be at the Monteleone Hotel in the French Quarter of New Orleans, LA. Playing space is available 24 hours, to suit your busy schedules, as well as a planned outing to the D-Day Museum, and a Beignet Breakfast.

Activity has been brisk on the Fronts as the gameplay has picked up a bit. Tournaments are running pretty much on schedule, and the ITSL is also at top gear.

T-Shirts for the 3rd Annual Convention in Fredericksburg, VA have finally become available. If you attended the event, or just want a T-Shirt visit the Supply Depot. IAAPA Logo T-Shirts are also arriving now, so get your Orders in for those as well. The 5th Annual T-Shirts will likely be late in arriving as we've had several design delays on those. Keep your eyes open for those on the site in a few weeks.

Comfy ChairAll proceeds from T-Shirt sales are used to support the IAAPA web site costs and the Prizes for the Tournaments. They look great, and make excellent gifts for the A&A Enthusiasts in your life.

Now for a few words from our hard working volunteer government members.

Senate Reports

REPORT FROM THE PRIME MINISTER - Michael (micwil) - webmaster@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

It has been a fairly uneventful summer...we created a new Chancellorship of League Play and appointed Brian (Sephorin) in that office - and may I say the ITSL has been running very smoothly under his stewardship. I will be spending the next couple of weeks working on cleaning up and cutting the inactive members of government from the rolls, and hope that this Legislative election will bring some new blood into government.

I would also like to take a moment to thank several long serving members of government for their constant efforts to ensure that IAAPA runs smoothly... John, our long-time serving Minister of Law, Rick, our ever-energetic President, Alan, our front-line Minister of Recruiting, Eric, our Minister of Logs, Chancellor of Stats AND Mentorship Coordinator, Warren, our hard-working Minister of Tournaments, and Gil, our Minister of Communication and Postmaster General. While they have done nothing in the last couple weeks that is exceptional or of special note, all of these individuals have consistently delivered on the offices they have taken on, and I would like to personally thank them all and applaud their efforts.

If we are unable to fill the Legislature in this election, and have an active Legislature with positions that are actually contributing to the IAAPA community, the Legislature will be dissolved and the Association Charter amended accordingly. I have been a strong proponent of the importance of the Legislature and for the membership to have an active and real voice and power in the administration of the Association. However, after several ineffectual Legislative sessions, the value of the efforts I have put into maintaining and promoting the Legislature is questionable and I will divert that time onto other projects.

So consider this the announcement of the start of the electoral campaign, all the current Legislative offices are up for election, and if there is a new area that you feel needs improvement, you can contact me and we will consider creating that new office. We will have an Election HQ (as always) off the main page on which all candidates will be listed, and as usual a BBS for the election will be created by Terry.

That's all I have to report in the last month - let's see if we can have a vibrant healthy election that reflects the state of our Association (which despite member involvement in government, is excellent).

Michael

REPORT FROM THE MINISTER OF COMMUNICATION - Gil (Tusk) - who@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

Hello Fellow IAAPA Warriors,

I am going to take this time to replace my original Revue Submission for a reflection on a loss. As you all may know; we recently lost a Stalwert of the IAAPA in AxisSpec. I personally played Tom in 19 IAAPA Games. It took me 13 games to finally beat him. He had all the patience in the world and was always ready for a game. Not once did he turn down a Game Challange. In the end I was 2W and 17L vs Tom. Yet I feel I still won. I had recently sent him a challenge before his passing. When I get to where you are now Tom; my challange still stands. I will miss you until then...

REPORT FROM THE MINISTER OF INTERNET OPERATIONS - Michael (Micwil) - webmaster@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

Not too much has been happening on the web site lately...here is a quick summary:

1) One big change has been the enhancements to the dice server, which we hope all members appreciate. As time permits we will continue to enhance the dice server.

2) The site itself has been performing flawlessly, with no down time registered since the last Revue.

As always, anyone willing to help with maintaining the web site or helping with the programming can contact me as I need all the help I can get ;)

REPORT FROM THE MINISTER OF LAW - John (JohnPin569) - law@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

From the Law Office...

Scales of Justice Greetings Fellow Warriors,

The 2001 Convention in New Orleans is just around the corner. It looks like we will have a good turnout again this year. A couple of people related that they had some problems with making the reservations, but the hotel seems to have corrected the problem.

We talked a little about canals in the March Revue. Let's revisit them again:

"Canals may be used if and only if you or your allies own the territory or territories controlling the canal at the beginning of your turn. Submarines may retreat through canals you or your allies control at the beginning of the turn even if the land territory or territories are in combat during that same turn."

A player recently asked if the above rules applied to aircraft as well. The answer is no. An aircraft may traverse the canal using the same "route" as the naval vessels. This means that they do not have to sustain an AA shot as they are not flying over land.

Aircraft may use the canals at any time, regardless of who owns the adjacent land territories. Air units routinely fly over enemy occupied territories and the same would apply here.

I hope to see all of you guys at the Con. That's all for now.

Take care.

John

REPORT FROM THE MINISTER OF LOGS - Eric (Raist) - logs@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

1) All logs are current as of 06/20/01. If you have sent in a log prior to that date, resubmit it, as I do not have it. The logs may be more current, but that date is what I am going to guarantee for now. Furthermore, those logs should be viewable as well. Logs fell a little behind, as I was on holidays. Will be catching up soon

2) For those looking for strategy on other players, and not finding logs. Two points:
a) If it says that there is supposed to be a game log, but isn't, you can email me at logs@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net and I should be able to supply you with that log.
b) If you are looking for bidding patterns of an opponent, look to point a, or if the game number is 8361 or higher, email myself, and I will supply it.

3) Please ensure that all turns are labelled properly in a log.

REPORT FROM THE MINISTER OF RECRUITING - Alan (Spud) - recruiting@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

Greetings from the Recruiting Office.

It has been almost 1 year since it became necessary for the IAAPA to charge dues. Many predicted the death of the club, and many old members did not come thru for the club. However, the IAAPA is alive and well thanks to the influx of new blood that has been steadily pouring into the club since that time.

To date there have been 81 new members join since September 2000 (clap clap clap) out of 329 applicants for a total retention rate of 24% (more thunderous applause). And with 5 new recruits enlisting for July, there seems to be no slowing down.

Recruiting out......

REPORT FROM THE MINISTER OF TOURNAMENTS - Warren (Reddwarf) - tourneys@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

Hi IAAPA members,

I'd like to take the opportunity to welcome my new roving assistant, DerranJorde to the Tournament Office. He will be gathering information on my behalf so please extend him a helping hand if he contacts you.

Well at last the 1999 Fall Open final is underway, the two contesting warriors are HighCmmdr and Frogman10 and far as I know this is a first tournament final for both players so I expect that it will be a hard fought game.

All of the 2000 season tournaments are in the late stages of competition and I am sure that the championship finals of these events will be taking place before the end of the year. Congratulations to all of the players who have made it this far.

I have compiled an informal list of the best performed players of 2000 thus far. The list is performance based. The most important criteria being tournament wins. (ie- best performance takes precedence over games won, for example KBell has won the most games but he has yet to reach a final in 2000 where Rewstr and Komp have both contested a final).

As Rewstr has won the only completed tournament of 2000 he tops the list however KBell may jump ahead as he is still participating in the late stages of a couple of events still being contested.

This list is just an UNOFFICIAL guide to the best tournament performers of 2000.

Best of 2000 so far...
1. Rewstr
2. Komp
3. KBell
4. Raist
5. Buzz
6. AxisSpec
7. Frogman10
8. JBell49
9. Dandeman
10. Razor1010

Well that's just about all for now except I would like to remind you all to send me your game numbers I only received about half of the Summer Open Safari rd1 numbers and DJ had to chase the rest up on my behalf.

Good luck on the battlefield

rgds,
RedDwarf

REPORT FROM THE CHANCELLOR OF MENTORSHIP - Eric (Raist) - mentors@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

The mentorship program is still going strong. Since last Revue, 14 new trial games have started (48 total), with 28 new recruits taking advantage of the game.

For anyone wishing to join up as a mentor, or as an opponent, feel free to contact me at mentors@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net.

REPORT FROM THE CHANCELLOR OF TEAM PLAY - Brian (Sephorin) - league@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

The fifth round start date for the SuperLeague has come and gone, and some teams are beginning to manifest a marked lead. Kamikaze Squadron Reunion has rocketed ahead in Division A with 6.2 points, while Der Generalstab leads division B with 6.3 points. Mind you the status quo could alter drastically once I get more game finish reports coming in.

On the individual level, both Steiner and Blackwatch have exhibited a certain degree of excellence with their 2 and 0 records, and they each may well earn a Combat Badge before the end of the season.

Let me once again encourage everyone to get their games for succeeding rounds started as soon as they can. I've noticed that the added pressure of being responsible to fellow teammates makes for longer games; people tend not to surrender unless their face is being ground into the dirt by their opponent's heel.

I will continue to update the ITSL webpages on a frequent basis, and I will send notice to all the players when I do so. At these times, please review the pages to make sure the information you have submitted to me (record, game #'s, etc.) is accurately displayed.

Also, I'm going to start a poll on the BBS. I would appreciate it if all SuperLeague players would mosey over there at some point to give me their opinions.

Best of luck to everybody in their upcoming games!

~Sephorin, Chancellor of Team Play

REPORT FROM THE CHANCELLOR OF STATS - Eric (Raist) - stats@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

Greetings:

I had several takers for the reviewing of the stats, and the problems were solved. If you ever need your stats checked, just drop me a line.

Just for everyone's interest, since last Revue there have been 223 gamestarts in IAAPA - a very healthy level of play.

Legislative Reports

REPORT FROM THE STATISTICIAN / RESEARCHER - Olyn (Sohoa) - squire@REMOVETHISaxisandallies.net

From "The Squire"

Well this has been a quiet summer not much seems to be happening in the Legislature or the Senate that has caused any kind of a ruckus. I think that maybe we need to ruffle some feathers once again. I say lets raise the dues (that should do it). I am still doing the Havoc thing and hope that all of the club membership is enjoying the results of the energy put into the newsletter. The Gray Knight has done a fine job with the "Havoc".

I also find that even when the Postmaster request a simple task to be voted on he gets nowhere. I am sadden by the thought of the Legislature being disbanded because of lack of interest. I also can see that the Legislature can just be disbanded with ease. The club does now seems to have the ability to perform on its own due the fine work by The Webmaster and his elves.

I wonder what would happen if a list of jobs that need to be done were to be sent to the membership, could we get members to take on some responsibility ?

Well at least "Havoc" will be around for awhile thanks to the fine work of the "Knight "and his "Squire" . We would appreciate it if the ones' who do enjoy reading the "Havoc" would take a moment to drop us a note . Praise is the one thing that would help us to keep doing a thankless job. "

ADDENDUM

From the desk of "Squire Sohoa"

I too will miss Tom Brown the "Errant Knight" .
I was to meet him in Vegas in the fall.
I had a nice relationship with the guy who could put you down in a way that made you feel glad that he knew you exsisted.
As he always said if you needed to have an easy win play me or Micwil.
I have to say that I wish that he would have won the game that really counted.

Bye Tom Brown

Closing comments:

As you are all likely now aware, we lost a well known and respected member of the IAAPA community this month...Tom Brown aka AxisSpec / AnAGamer passed away of a heart attack on July 16th. We will be creating a permanent memorial on the web site for Tom and any other member of IAAPA who passes away while on active duty with IAAPA. Any comments / suggestions for this area is welcome.

I must wish GodSpeed to AxisSpec. I had the pleasure of working with him for many years and met him at the 4th Annual Convention in Las Vegas. He even went out and bought several A&A Boardgames for us in Las Vegas when we ran short. I'm playing on one of those sets now. I know that wherever Tom is now, he's in good company, and will be with us all again when we arrive after him.
