IAAPA presents: “Snapshots in Time”

Well Facil has finally knocked the Rewstr from his perch, gaining first place on the ratings ladder following a run of 14 straight wins. At the top we now have Rewstr in 2^nd place, Spud in 3^rd, HoganS is in 4^th and Nieles in 5^th place. Exciting times indeed. We also have a bucket load of promotions this month, congratulations to the following members:

Thanks to all those members who have emailed me about the monthly Snapshots. I humbly accept all praise and small unmarked bills. And for all those rookies who keep asking why they are not in the Snapshots, well it’s because you have to complete at least one game to make the ladder, so get to it guys.

War Trivia: On this day, sixty two years ago in 1940, whilst Hitler was briefing his commanders on the planned invasion of Russia, the UK launched Operation Hurry. This was an attempt to secure their Mediterranean lifeline, whereby the Aircraft Carrier Argus, steamed from Gibraltar to Sardinia and launched 12 fighters to help defend Malta, which was under constant attack by the Italians. The operation was considered a success as only one UK fighter was shot down in the ensuing battle over Malta harbor.

Interview with the Rewstr

The message boards have been a little quiet of late…too quiet. So I moseyed (gotta love that word) over and lurked around the message board at the AAMC. Well… I found some interesting posts about our legendary Rewstr. This got me thinking, there was no time for drinkin, and there’s no time to wait, cause the snapshots are late, so hi-ho, hi-ho it’s off to Cleveland, Ohio we go!

Daninja: Well thank you Rewstr for taking the time to answer a few questions for our information hungry members. OK… how old are you? Are you a family man? Any little chickens?

Rewstr: I am 42 and have a 12 year old son and 14 year old daughter.

Daninja: And what sort of work do you do in the real world?

Rewstr: I am System Manager.

Daninja: How long have you been playing Axis and Allies?

Rewstr: About 10 years.

Daninja: How did you come up with the alias Rewstr?

Rewstr: My dad and I have the same initials “REW”. My dad’s friends could never remember my name, so they nicknamed me the Rewster.

Daninja: I was going to ask you whether you felt any pressure being the highest rated and ranked player in IAAPA, but your recent nemesis Facil has knocked you down from the number one spot this month. You are still however the highest ranked player in the club.

Rewstr: Yes, well, I used to feel the pressure. But after being knocked down a few times, I realized “ya know, life does go on”.

Daninja: Are there any games which stick out in your memory as being particular exciting?

Rewstr: For any greybeards left out there that were at the first convention, I played a game versus L A Steam. First lady in the club I do believe. Anyway, she was pounding me as the Axis and had the Japanese with HB. I broke off a force from Karelia and marched them Caucus-Persia-India-Burma. Meanwhile, a US naval force was coming from the West Coast. Lisa crushed the force from Karelia with her Heavies (which was actually my plan J), which left me with 1 attack on Japan. In this case, I needed LRA for my bomber forces to join the attack. LRA was obtained, Japan was taken with 1 infantry and the Rewstr was buying the drinks J

Daninja: That was exciting…, especially that bit about her pounding you as the Axis J. OK moving right along, what was your worst game?

Rewstr: I make lots of mistakes, it’s up to you guys to find them J

Daninja: Do you think the bidding system we use balances out the game?

Rewstr: Absolutely. If you lose with the Axis, bid more J

Daninja: Have you tried the revised edition yet?

Rewstr: Sorry, I have not had a chance.

Daninja: Who do you prefer to play – axis or allies?

Rewstr: I enjoy playing both sides. Never gave it much thought, but I start each turn with “OK, if I was him, what would I do.”

Daninja: Which opponent or player do you fear the most? (besides me J)

Rewstr: Seriously – all of them! Back in the good old days, folks made mistakes and I would capitalize off them. Now, there are very few mistakes.

Daninja: Yes, well, we won’t go there, I kind of remember a certain tournament game against you L. OK any hot tips for the newbies?

Rewstr: Watch your opponent and learn. After 100+ games, I still see my opponents coming up with new moves.

Daninja: Is there anything you dislike about the game?

Rewstr: Sometimes those wacky dice………

Daninja: Do you think the club is on the right track?

Rewstr: Yes the club is on the right track. Knock on wood, but all seems to be running very smoothly.

Daninja: You really don't want to play me in every first round tournament - that's correct isn't it J

Rewstr: Correct J

Daninja: Did you hear that Fuz J. Alrighty then… now for the good stuff, how about a quick Rewstr strategy lesson!

Rewstr: I guess the first thing I would like to do is review what I consider some “basic truths”. At the start of the game, the Axis is dictating the action. The Allies can mount minor offensives, but they don’t have enough units to keep the pressure on. The US can mount a Pacific fleet, but this only slows down part of the Japanese offensive. The Axis are still in control of the most of the action.

I have found that once the Axis have stalled in their offensive, seldom do they come back to win. Given those previous points, the key objective while playing the Allies is “How do I take the momentum from the Axis?” Once the Axis have been stopped, the Allies are free to develop whatever kind of counter-offense they feel like.

I have found the key is to counter-attack the Axis as opportunities present themselves. The problem the Axis faces is they cannot be everywhere at the same time. If the Germans are in Africa, there are not as many Germans in Eastern Europe and Western Europe. If the Japanese are in Africa, there are not as many Japanese in Asia.

When setting the Allies up during rounds 2-5, you must have your forces positioned to counter-attack Ukraine in the West and Eno\Nov\Kaz in the East. I have found it best to use the UK in the Ukraine against Germany and the US\USSR in Kaz\Eno\Nov against Japan. Get some Americans into Moscow as soon as possible. Being able to attack Eno\Nov\Kaz with American infantry and air power is very important. I do not see the wisdom of having some Brits in Moscow. When attacking Cauc\Eno\Nov\Kaz they do not earn any IPCs for the Allies.

And finally don’t waste your Americans. They came a long way to get into the action. They are incredibly valuable in punching a hole in the Japanese attack and allowing a Russian armored force to take on an un-prepared position behind the Japanese lines. Follow that up with a couple of Brit fighters landing to reinforce the Russian armor and a huge hole has just formed in the Japanese supply line.

Daninja: That was great mate J. Have you any parting words of wisdom?

Rewstr: Hmm, when playing the Allies, the key to victory is balancing your forces so that you have options. This forces the Axis to counter your options (which slows him down) or forgo attacks he would have liked to have made (this definitely slows him down).

Well, what can I say, very interesting insights into the game from our legendary Rewstr. Well, that act will be hard to follow J.
