IAAPA BATTLEFIELD REVIEW #2 - February 2001

Welcome to the IAAPA Battlefield Review ISSUE #002.

The BBS is only a temporary home for the BF Review (I'm glad I didn't call it something like the BattleSite Review as the acronym would have been the BS review - not good)

Anyway, the BF Review will eventually find a home on an HTML page in the tourney section of the IAAPA web site. Micwil is currently looking for an Army style camouflage background.

In this issue you will find tournament results, veiws (mostly mine) player comments and WWII related trivia.

In this section players have their say and can rub it in while pretending to be modest in victory when they really want everyone to know that they kicked your BUTT.

A small selection of player comments

-----------------------------------------------------

Here is another Fall 2000 upset as another one of those pesky enlisted guys slays a much higher ranked opponent. It just goes to show its not all beer and skittles being an officer.

rd1 2000 Fall Classic.
# 8202 amgor defeats prairiepork (cnty9047)

Amgor (Allies) writes....

"Good Game for the Allies as they had all the luck, and Bad game for the Axis as they had no luck. Nothing you can do about the Dice Gods. Maybe some day it will change?"

Probably not, those Dice Gods are real BASTARDS!! Congratulations Amgor - I present you with the Churchill victory salute. Well Done Soldier!.

------------------------------------------------------

8249 Col Hogan def GroeFaz rd2

" Disastrous luck for the Germans in Ger 1 in Ukr left EEur wide open to Russian counter attack in Rus 2, and the UK cleared WEur in UK 1 leaving it open for US troops in US 1. GroeFaz saw the oncoming slaughter and hopeless situation and surrendered after UK 1: "I will never win this game with US troops in WEu and few or allied troops in EEu."

I predict the COL will peel the Spudmaster in their 2000 Fall Classic rd3 match

----------------------------------------------------------

8226 Raist def ToddVomit rd2 (2000 Fall Classic)

Raist sez........

" The US Pacific navy was virtually indestructable, destroying the entire Japanese fleet, and half of their airforce. This hampered Japan's ability to develop in Asia, while the Allies triple teamed Germany. Good game all around."

Yup, another of my Fall Classic choices bites the bullet!

-----------------------------------------------------------

Rewstr def HighCmmdr (2000 Invite rd3)

Rewstr crows......

"A classic game. With the Allies doing well in the minor battles, the Wehrmacht was forced to attack Moscow. I could almost hear the chorus from "Panzer Lied" (theme song from the battle of bulge) as I clicked on the dice roller. The end result - Moscow taken w/ 1 Arm."

Panzer Lied....I love that scene from the battle of the bulge where that bunch of Germans are standing around stomping their boots belting out that tune.

Its really COOL....too bad about the rest of the movie though. I thought that the battle of the bulge took place in the Ardennes but if the film's scenery is any indicator it seems to take place somewhere in Libya!

------------------------------------------------------------------

8264 KenBell def GroeFaz rd2

" This game was the tale of two Axis powers. Germany was strong throughout the game. Japan started so poorly that they were actually knocked off the mainland in UK #2. While Japan struggled to regain a foothold on the mainland Germany built up their forces. In a bold move Russia attempted to counterattack Germany in Karelia. The attack failed securing Axis victory. "

Ken is one of my favorites for the Fall Classic (I just didn't mention it before 'cause he joined the tourney the day it started). Ken is also doing well in the Millennium and 2000 Summer Open tourneys.

He is the Pete Sampras of the IAAPA this year.

*** Fall Classic 2000 PLAYER REPORT ***

After one complete round of battle and several skirmishes between advanced elements in round two and three, I take a look back at my initial picks & favorites.

HighCmmdr, the Classic's TOP GUN was an early victim of JBell. In my RECON report I suggested that JBell will be a tough round1 opponent. BUZZ and ToddVomit both fell in rd2, falling well below my expectations.

My other picks are still progressing. KBell, the late inclusion, is my personal pick for the silverware. He is drawn to meet either Spud or Col.Hogan in rd4 and even though these two guys have good IAAPA records I think that Ken is going to take out at least one tournament of the 2000 season, whether it be the Fall Classic, Millenium or the Summer Open.

Komp, another of the Fall Classic top guns is looking well placed to make the Semi-finals, hiccups along the way may come in the form of Frogman10 (rd4) and perhaps JBell or Henrik (rd5) if these guys make it to these rounds.

Warning: readers discretion advised. NOT suitable for cat lovers.

A dog's best friend.....is definitely not a Russian soldier. Did you know that the Russians used dogs attached to high explosives to knock out German tanks during WWII.

For the more intrepid Russian soldier I recommend using the neighbors cat strapped to a satchel charge and dipped in axle grease, move in and slap fluffy onto the wheels of the nearest German tank Saving Private Ryan style, not only is this a good way to incapacitate a tank but you will be doing the environment a favor at the same time.

----------------------------------------------------------

Well while I leave you to ponder that scene here is some WWII trivia I found on the web.

** disclaimer - I do not take responsibility for the authenticity of the following info so if someone is yanking your collective chains I do not hold myself accountable.

Barbarossa - the code word for the German invasion of the Soviet Union literally means red beard. Why that code name? I Dunno but I imagine a couple of million Werhmacht soldiers asked the same question.

Although many people refer to the Allied D-Day landings in Normandy as "Operation Overlord", the landing operation was actually called "Operation Neptune". The landings were originally known as Overlord, but in September 1943 the codename was changed to Neptune, and Overlord from then on was used to refer to the general Allied strategy in northwestern Europe.

Most people know that the name of the B-29 bomber that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima was called the Enola Gay do you know the name of the B-29 that dropped the second bomb and its original target?

This B-29 was known as "Bock's Car", and Nagasaki was not its original target - the intended target city was Kokura, which escaped as the bomber was under orders to attack only a clear target and the city was shrouded in smog at the time. Nagasaki was the first alternative target city.

Being a bit of a movie buff and in keeping with issue # 001's Hollywood theme (re: Hogan's Heroes trivia) I have another actor with a WWII connection.

Lee Marvin, star of The Dirty Dozen, was a US Marine in WWII. In the battle of Saipan in 1944 he was seriously wounded in the buttocks and invalided home.

One piece of trivia about Lee Marvin that surprised me was that he was 6'3" in height. I always thought that he was short.

Marvin died of a heart attack in 1987 and is buried in Arlington (next to Joe Louis).

NOT JUST A ONE MAN BAND
-----------------------------------

Whilst the Battlefield Review is mostly my own personal views I welcome any Association member to send me their comments, trivia, stories etc. relating to either WWII, A&A or the their IAAPA opponents (preferably from a tourney game). I even encourage players who have been knocked out of a tournament to drop me a line and give me a second perspective of their game and their opinion of their opponent (lucky, played well, bordered on greatness etc.) Don't worry I won't put in any detailed strategy plans I just would like a general idea of the caliber of the player.

send to: tourneys@axisandallies.net with the subject heading " Battlefield Review "

OR when you send me your tourney game results feel free to add a few comments about your game and opponent.

---------------------------------------------------------

So ends ISSUE # 002 of the IAAPA Battlefield Review. In the next issue, more game results, player views, trivia and I will hopefully have some stats ready for display.
